    Well in the meantime they have upgraded to Java 7...

    Well in the meantime they have upgraded to Java 7 (it is an IBMi Power Server) and the problem has gone away :)

    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: ch.qos.logback.core.Append

    Any idea what might cause this fatal error on start-up?

    Is it a configuration issue or an issue with the Java installation. In this instance, they are attempting to use Java 6 pending a Java 7...
